Meet Kellie Doherty
Science Fiction Author
Hello, everyone, my name is Kellie Doherty. I guess I should tell you a bit about myself, huh? Well, I’m an author and freelance editor living in Portland, OR. My work’s been published in Flight (Mischief Corner Press), Mission 20 (Back of Beyond Press) Pathos, Alaska Women Speak, F Magazine, and The Chugiak-Eagle River Star, as well as the blogs of 49 Writers and Ooligan Press. My debut novel—Finding Hekate—came out in April 2016 and the sequel—Losing Hold—came out in April 2017. (Collectively those two books are called the Cicatrix Duology, more on that below!) I’m currently working on a five-book fantasy series!
A huge thank you to Deanna who was kind enough to host this Q&A on her blog. Let’s get into it, shall we?
Why did you decide to write a science fiction romance?
I knew I always wanted to write science fiction, since I grew up watching Star Trek, Stargate, Star Wars, Firefly, etc. and loved the idea of traveling via spaceship. I love stars and planets, too, so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to meld two things I love—writing and space—into one story. As for the romance part, I hadn’t really thought about writing romance before, but once Mia and Cassidy walked into my life, it just made sense that they’d form a romantic relationship. Mia desperately needed someone to confide in, to share her life with, to safely lose control with, and Cassidy was that woman for her. It’s fun to write romance, too, the push and pull of a relationship amid the fights and terror and spaceships. It’s an interesting juxtaposition.
Was this story about Mia always meant to be a duology?
No, actually! Mia’s story actually started out as a short story written for my undergrad creative writing group. My group showed a great interest in the story and I wanted to continue it. I was going to write only one book but once I got to the end of Finding Hekate, the story was far from over so I wrote Losing Hold.
What part of Losing Hold did you write first?
I wrote the ending first! The second-to-last chapter, in fact. I wanted to know how it ended, wanted to know what the characters were aiming for during this second installment. Plus, it was a really fun scene to write! (Get ready for a fight scene, guys!)
What part of Losing Hold was the hardest to write?
The hardest part was actually the sex scene. Even though I write romantic fanfic and edit romance all the time, I blush super easily whenever those types of scenes come up. My face burned the whole time writing the LH scene, but I’m really happy with how it turned out. Mia needed it as a character. She need to trust someone enough to be that vulnerable and to lose control in a different way than she had been forced to do prior to that scene. It was hard, but it was worth it!
What are some new characters in this book that we didn’t meet in the first book?
Oooo, I’m going to introduce you to two new characters here, the others you’ll have to find out for yourself. *wink* Anyway, two new characters I’m super excited about are Commodore Bay and Nin. Commodore Bay is pretty much the admiral’s second in command. He comes across as a strict military man with a bit of a mean streak, but there’s more to him than meets the eye. As for Nin, well, let’s just say Nin is an old balding quirky scientist who had a large hand in starting it all. In creating the Acedians, even. They were so much fun to write, and I hope you enjoy meeting them in the story!
Well, that’s it for now! Thanks so much, Deanna, for having me on the blog.

The Cicatrix Duology:
Finding Hekate and Losing Hold
About Finding Hekate:
Mia Foley is running away from the attack that changed her life. She’s captain of a new spaceship when the Acedians find her and try blasting her peaceful crew from the black. She must sever her bonds in order to run, again. But she’s grown fond of this crew, particularly Cassidy Gates. Staying with them will jeopardize their safety, and they have much closer fears than the Acedian hunters. Mia’s time is running out. She’s becoming one of them.
About Losing Hold:
In the sequel to Finding Hekate, after escaping Donavin’s grasp, Mia Foley and her crew crash on a prison planet and need to deal with its inhabitants, beast and criminals alike. Mia hears Donavin in her mind once again and knows the transformation into one of his drones isn’t far off. Trapped in her own body, lashing against Donavin each chance she gets, and fearful that she’ll lose it all, Mia has to rely on her crew—on Cassidy—to save her. But she’s not the only one transforming in her little group, and things never go as smoothly as they could out in the black.
